Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education while also working at two other positions. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. It was impossible to realize the dream after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. As a poet started performing, she was able to perform at live poetry recitals. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. The two ended up working together and co-writing You Got Me. Through the Roots performance, she declared herself as an artist. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was a performer on the Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first signing artist for the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
